A small sample is all that is required for analysis of most materials, approximately the size of a 20c piece. However, asbestos is not evenly distributed in vinyl tiles so to get an accurate result a larger sample of approximately 10x10cm or the size of a business card is required. For analysis of a soil sample, it is required that the sample does not exceed 150g in weight.
What is Asbestos?
Asbestos, a natural mineral fibre, was a prevalent component in Australian construction materials before the mid-1980s. Its use was widespread due to its flexibility, strength, insulating properties, chemical resistance, and cost-effectiveness.
Materials containing asbestos are divided into two categories: friable and non-friable. Non-friable asbestos, often combined with substances like cement, is more commonly encountered in buildings. In contrast, friable asbestos, not bound in a solid matrix, can easily release airborne fibres.
Both friable and non-friable asbestos types present significant health hazards, especially if not maintained or removed correctly. Determining the presence of asbestos in materials requires specific sample testing in Melbourne.
Typical Non-Friable Asbestos Materials:
These materials contain asbestos fibres embedded within a stable matrix. Non-friable asbestos examples include, but are not limited to, asbestos cement products, vinyl floor tiles, friction materials, and other products where asbestos is firmly integrated into the material. If the matrix deteriorates significantly, these materials may become friable.
Typical Friable Asbestos Materials:
Friable asbestos materials are loosely composed and can be crumbled or reduced to powder easily by hand when dry. Such materials often include asbestos lagging, sprayed insulation, and millboard, among others.
