A small sample is all that is required for analysis of most materials, approximately the size of a 20c piece. However, asbestos is not evenly distributed in vinyl tiles so to get an accurate result a larger sample of approximately 10x10cm or the size of a business card is required. For analysis of a soil sample, it is required that the sample does not exceed 150g in weight.

What is Asbestos?
Asbestos, a mineral fibre occurring in nature, was a prevalent component in Australian building materials before the mid-1980s. Its use was widespread due to its flexibility, strength, heat and electrical insulation properties, chemical resistance, and cost-effectiveness.
Materials containing asbestos fall into two categories: friable and non-friable. Non-friable asbestos, typically combined with substances like cement, is the most common form found in buildings. In contrast, friable asbestos materials are loosely bound and more prone to dispersing airborne fibres.
Both friable and non-friable asbestos materials present significant health hazards to workers and others if not maintained or removed correctly. Only through specific testing can the presence of asbestos in building materials be confirmed.
Typical non-friable asbestos materials include asbestos cement products, vinyl floor tiles, friction materials, and other products where asbestos is embedded within a matrix. If the matrix deteriorates significantly, these materials may then be reclassified as friable.
Examples of common friable asbestos materials include asbestos lagging, sprayed insulation, and millboard. These materials contain asbestos that is not firmly bound and can be easily crumbled or reduced to powder by hand pressure when dry.
