Asbestos Sampling
Identifibre specializes in asbestos sampling, offering analysis of building materials and soil samples to detect asbestos presence. Accredited by the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA), our lab is equipped with experienced analysts. We provide flexible turnaround times to accommodate different budgets and urgency levels. Recognizing the hazardous nature of asbestos and its potential to halt work sites, we aim to deliver swift results. To ensure safety, halt any work if asbestos is suspected in your environment, and engage Identifibre for prompt asbestos sample analysis.

A small sample is all that is required for analysis of most materials, approximately the size of a 20c piece. However, asbestos is not evenly distributed in vinyl tiles so to get an accurate result a larger sample of approximately 10x10cm or the size of a business card is required. For analysis of a soil sample, it is required that the sample does not exceed 150g in weight.

What is Asbestos?
Asbestos sampling is essential for identifying the presence of asbestos in building materials. Asbestos, a naturally occurring mineral fibre, was extensively used in Australian construction before the mid-1980s due to its flexibility, strength, insulation properties, chemical resistance, and cost-effectiveness.
Asbestos-containing materials are classified into two types: friable and non-friable. Non-friable asbestos, commonly found in our infrastructure, is embedded in materials like cement, forming a stable matrix. Conversely, friable asbestos materials are not securely bound, making them more prone to releasing asbestos fibres into the air.
Both friable and non-friable asbestos pose serious health risks if not properly managed or removed. Asbestos sampling is the only definitive method to confirm its presence in materials.
Examples of non-friable asbestos include asbestos cement products, vinyl floor tiles, and friction materials where asbestos is securely embedded. However, when the matrix deteriorates significantly, these materials can become friable.
Friable asbestos materials, like asbestos lagging, sprayed insulation, and millboard, are loosely bound and can be easily crumbled or pulverized, increasing the risk of airborne fibre release. Asbestos sampling helps in accurately identifying these materials to ensure safe handling and removal.
